Strong Global Materials Company Demonstrates Commitment to Technology and Innovation

Düsseldorf - October 29, 2010

Four months past its launch as a strong, stand-alone materials company with global reach, Styron is proud to showcase its broad range of innovative plastics products and technologies at K 2010, the leading international trade show for the plastics and rubber industry, held in Düsseldorf, Germany (October 27 - November 3, 2010).

Styron's presence at K 2010 illustrates its industry leadership and provides a platform for strengthening customer relationships and showcasing Styron market-focused innovations. Styron's theme at K 2010 - Powering Ideas - articulates the value that customers derive from Styron's commitment to technology and innovation.

"Powering Ideas is an excellent theme for Styron's participation at K 2010," said Paul Moyer, Vice President and General Manager, Styron Plastics. "Styron is a company based on technology and innovation. We have a long legacy of making the impossible possible when it comes to materials challenges. Our customers come to us because we help them solve problems, enabling them to think bigger and invent their next generation of products. And that's exactly what we do at Styron. Our approach and our value proposition can be summed up in those two words: Powering Ideas."

As proof of this, Styron proudly introduces eight new game-changing technologies and grades that will be launched in the coming weeks and months:

  • Three new specialty resins for thinner, more cost-effective TV enclosures

Styron is renewing its portfolio for the TV market with specialty products that will help original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and molders meet the requirements of current and future TV enclosures. At K 2010, Styron introduces three tailored solutions that enable OEMs and molders to create enclosures for thinner, more sustainable TVs, at a much lower cost. They are:

  • A high heat and high flow PC/ABS blend
  • A high flow and high module PC/PET/ABS blend
  • A high flow transparent PC
  • INSPIRE™ At-Press TPO System for Automotive

Styron Automotive is a leading supplier of innovative plastic solutions to the automotive industry. These solutions further improve the safety and performance of cars, make them even more fuel efficient and support increased quality of a vehicle. Styron's latest innovation for the automotive industry is the INSPIRE™ At-Press TPO System, a new system for injection-molding of automotive polypropylene components, saving costs and time and providing more flexibility for component manufacturers.

  • Next generation environmental stress crack resistant HIPS grade for fridge liners

Styron is a recognized leader in appliances with best-in-class products, especially for refrigerators and air conditioning systems. This breakthrough grade and technology many customers waited for will enable significant thickness reduction of fridge liners and cost savings without compromising on excellent quality, aesthetics and durability. Implementation starts in 2011.

  • Customization of CALIBRE™ 301-58 LT Polycarbonate to meet individual customer needs

Styron's new high light transmission polycarbonate grade with high melt flow is an ideal and flexible solution for LED lighting applications. In addition, opalescent and tint versions, as well as UV protection, can now be tailored on customer needs, providing product designers and OEMs with the freedom to design tomorrow's LED applications.

  • New branched polycarbonate grade for clear sheet producers

Styron is expanding its polycarbonate family with XZ 94260.00, a new experimental polycarbonate resin which will be commercialized at a later date as CALIBRE™ 603-2. XZ 94260.00 is designed to address some of the specific challenges faced by the building and construction industry. The new resin allows polycarbonate sheet producers in Europe to produce heavier and more complex multi-wall sheets with enhanced thermal insulation properties.

  • CO2RE foaming technology for polystyrene packaging applications

This game-changing technology by Styron responds to the growing market dynamics in the packaging market to increase cost competitiveness whilst reducing packaging weight. CO2RE foaming technology allows converters to produce polystyrene sheet with a core layer of foam using physical blowing agents, reducing sheet density and raw material consumption considerably. It creates added value for converters and the rest of the value chain and allows quick implementation on existing extrusion lines at low cost.

In addition, Styron has launched six new products and grades in the weeks leading up to K 2010:

  • STYRON™ C-TECH Polystyrene for clear packaging
  • CALIBRE™ 1060 DVD Polycarbonate resin for the optical media market in the Americas and Europe
  • EMERGE™ 8701HH, a high heat specialty resin for smart meters
  • CALIBRE™ TNIR Polycarbonate solution for transparent near-infrared blocking, for use in the construction industry
  • CALIBRE™ 502-3 Polycarbonate linear grade for sheet extrusion
  • CALIBRE™ 301-58 Polycarbonate for LED lighting

"These customer-driven innovations and our strong innovation pipeline are indicative of our strong and consistent investment in technology and innovation," said Paul Moyer, Vice President and General Manager, Styron Plastics. "At Styron, we are passionately focused on delivering high performance products and innovative thinking to our customers to help them succeed. We strive to bridge the gap between our customer's ideas and reality - to create shared value for them and for Styron."
