Horgen, Switzerland - March 10, 2011
When looking for an improved dedicated transport concept in PC for optical media while reducing costs in freight & handling, Stade selected Talke as new carrier, who has built special light weighted high quality bulk containers for this segment.
In late January, Alfred Talke GmbH & Co. KG handed over the first three of seven 30ft stainless steel containers to plastic, latex and rubber multinational Styron. The stainless steel containers are part of a ‘clean room’ transport concept devised by Talke for Styron’s CALIBRE polycarbonate resins for Optical Media products.

The delivery of these containers represents a significant milestone in the partnership between Styron Stade and logistics provider Talke which also operates a major site in the town.
Key to the transport concept are seven 30ft stainless steel containers that have been specifically designed to meet the quality requirements of CALIBRE polycarbonate resins for Optical Media products. Smaller and lighter than the containers previously used and employing a newly modified loading technology, they offer around 10 percent more in terms of payload. This is accompanied by a double-digit percentage reduction in CO2 emissions.
Jens Hariefeld, Senior Production Leader Polycarbonate Styron Deutschland Anlagengesellschaft mbH says, "The transport concept submitted by Talke represented the best opportunity for us to offer the market significantly enhanced performance while balancing environmental and economic considerations. It has clearly demonstrated that change is possible when strong partners such as Styron and Talke act in concert."
Klaus Wessing, Director Transport Division & HSSEQ Talke Services Logistic Services comments, "We are delighted that we succeeded in persuading Styron of the merits of our transport concept. In the context of our commitment to promoting sustainable transport and logistics, developing concepts that combine increased efficiency with a significant reduction in of our carbon footprint is one of the core tasks on which we intend to focus in the coming years."
CALIBRE polycarbonate product for Optical Media is used in the production of CDs, DVDs and Blu ray discs. Polycarbonate is also used for the manufacture of high-quality furniture and in construction projects. This high-performance material is manufactured at the Styron production facility in Stade and transported from there to customers throughout Europe.
