São Paulo - December 02, 2011 -
Styron received the "Araucária Award" during the 44th Pulp and Paper International Congress & Exhibition that took place in October in São Paulo, Brazil.
The Araucária Award is offered to the best technical presentation about paper and coating technology. The winning presentation was "Considerations for the selection of binder in double and triple coated systems: Effect of under layer starch migration on end use performance – Parts 1 and 2." The presentation was developed by Greg Welsch and Francis Dobler; Júlio Natalense presented.
This work involved several pilot coater trials at Styron’s plants in Midland and Samstagern, as well as the development of a specific analytical method to detect starch migration. Pilot trials were run to investigate the impact of binder type (SB latex or starch) and amount in pre and middle layer on the properties of double and triple coated glossy and silk fine papers. Also different types of starches were considered, such as the commonly used dextrine starch and hydroxyethylated starches. Numerical models were defined which described the influence of latex and starch in pre and middle layer on final properties of the double or triple coated papers, such as strength, ink setting and mottling. In particular the lower binding power of starch compared to latex could be demonstrated and quantified.
Analytical investigation validated the hypothesis of significant starch migration from the middle layer into the top layer. Statistical analysis suggested up to 60% of the starches can migrate to topcoats. Although these trials encompassed different coating systems (triple versus double), different base papers, significant raw material differences, and dramatically different starch chemistries, the conclusions drawn, with respect to the impact of starch migration from under layers into a topcoat, are remarkably consistent.
